Derek Moore — Founder, Hensting Alpacas

Where the Name Comes From — and Why It Matters

Hensting Alpacas takes its name from Hensting Lane, where our family first set foot in alpaca farming. My wife and I, along with our children, built the herd from the ground up — not as a commercial venture but as a family passion. Every animal was handled, trained, and cared for by us personally.

In 2009, with 40 alpacas in our care, we moved to Kiln Lane, where the extra space allowed the herd to grow to 71 alpacas at its peak. It was around that time that friends began helping us train the babies, and watching the joy on their faces sparked an idea. We started advertising for public alpaca walks — one of the first operations of its kind in the South of England. Growth was rapid. Word spread quickly, people travelled from across the country and from abroad, and we began taking on staff and volunteers.

Like many businesses, Covid brought upheaval. We sold Kiln Lane and rented the land back for three years before it eventually had to be returned. Finding a new home for the herd — without significant capital behind us — was one of the hardest chapters. We needed rented land, and we needed it urgently.

The answer came from an unexpected direction. While negotiating a nitrates and phosphates offset payment to Eastleigh Borough Council for a new property I was developing, I asked a fairly direct question: did the council own any land suitable for alpacas? They did. That conversation led us to Itchen Valley Country Park, where we now run five unique walking experiences across the nature reserve. The only condition was reducing the herd — we had to rehome 25 animals. It was heartbreaking, but it ultimately made the business leaner, more focused, and better for the animals that remained.

Today we run with 9 volunteers and 5 members of staff, a herd of 40 carefully managed alpacas, and the same hands-on breeding philosophy we started with. When you buy an alpaca from Hensting, you buy from that history.

How Much Does an Alpaca Cost in the UK?

A straightforward guide to alpaca pricing for 2026, based on our current stock and the wider UK market.

Pet or companion alpacas (wethers) start from around £2000 and are the most accessible entry point. Because alpacas are herd animals, you'll need at least three — budget £1,500 to £2,400 for a starter trio.

Breeding females are priced from £2,400 for young prospects, rising to £3,500 to £5,000+ for pregnant females or those with elite bloodlines. Stud males start around £2,500 and can exceed £5,000 for proven champions.

Ongoing costs run to approximately £200 to £400 per alpaca per year for feed, hay, vaccinations, worming, and annual shearing. Allow for one-off costs for fencing and shelter — alpacas need shade, dry ground, and secure boundaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from new buyers.

How many alpacas should I start with?

At least three. Alpacas are herd animals and suffer stress in isolation or pairs. They're significantly happier, calmer, and easier to manage in a group of three or more. Our starter packages are built around this.

Are your males really fully halter trained?

Yes — all our males are halter trained and handled regularly as part of the daily routine here. They walk on a lead, load into vehicles calmly, and are used to being handled. This isn't a claim we make lightly; it's what we do every day at the park.

Do you deliver alpacas across the UK?

Yes. We use professional livestock transporters experienced with alpacas. Delivery within 50 miles of Hampshire is free. Beyond that, we quote individually and make sure animals travel comfortably and safely.

What documentation comes with each alpaca?

BAS registration papers, full health records, vaccination history, a care guide, and feeding recommendations. Every purchase also includes 6 months of telephone support from our team.

Can I visit and see the animals before buying?

Absolutely — we encourage it. Due to Eastleigh Borough Council licensing at Itchen Valley Country Park, alpaca sales viewings take place at our private off-site facility. Full directions are provided when you book a visit.

How much land do alpacas need?

Around 5 to 10 alpacas per acre is a reasonable guideline, depending on grass quality and management. They're light grazers with soft padded feet and won't damage your land the way heavier livestock would.
