Why Are Some Alpacas Cheap?

There are good reasons and bad reasons for a low price. Good reasons: a breeder reducing herd numbers (as we are), older proven animals, wethers (castrated males) sold as companions, or an end-of-season sale. Bad reasons: no registration papers, poor health, unhandled or nervous animals, or a seller who won’t let you view them.

Red Flags When Buying Cheap Alpacas

  • A single alpaca for sale. Alpacas are herd animals and suffer alone. Buy at least three, or add to an existing group.
  • No BAS registration or health records. Ask for the British Alpaca Society registration and vaccination, worming and shearing history.
  • No viewing allowed. Always meet the alpacas, see how they are handled and check their condition.
  • Unhandled or halter-shy animals. A cheaper alpaca that can’t be caught or led costs you time and vet stress later.
  • No after-sales help. A good breeder will answer your questions after the sale.

What Does a Fair Sale Price Look Like?

How to Start a Herd on a Budget

  • Buy three together. It’s kinder to the alpacas, and they settle faster.
  • Consider males or wethers first. They’re usually the cheapest way in, and you can add breeding females later.
  • Use a proven stud rather than buying a young one. An older proven male like Sparticus gives you tested genetics for a fraction of the price.
  • Check your land and fencing first. Around 5–6 alpacas per acre, with 4ft stock fencing. See our guide to starting an alpaca farm.
