Alpaca Breeding & Birthing Guide

Complete reproduction management for UK alpacas. From genetic selection to birthing care, drawn from Hensting Alpacas' experience keeping and breeding a herd of around 40 animals in Hampshire since 2009, alongside BAS standards.

Successful alpaca breeding requires careful planning, genetic knowledge and expert management. From initial genetic selection through birthing and registration, every step influences the health, quality and commercial value of your herd. The UK's climate and regulations call for specific approaches to ensure successful outcomes.

Breeding philosophy: Careful breeding decisions matter. Genetic diversity, sound selection criteria and meticulous record keeping are the foundation of any successful breeding programme.
Genetic Selection

Strategic Breeding Decisions

  • Conformation first: prioritise structural soundness, which indicates health, longevity and breeding potential
  • Fleece quality: assess density, fineness, crimp, brightness and colour uniformity
  • Genetic diversity: avoid inbreeding (father-daughter, mother-son, brother-sister)
  • Line breeding: breeding distant relatives is acceptable when managed properly
  • DNA colour testing: creates uniform colour outcomes and improved traits
  • Bloodline assessment: select strong, uniform genetic lines
Inbreeding warning: Can cause significant health issues and abnormalities. Maintain detailed lineage records and use pedigree analysis tools.
Mating Procedures

UK Breeding Methods & Timing

Mating methods

  • Pen mating: female in 3x3m pen, male on headcollar
  • Mobile stud services: stud travels to your farm
  • Drive-by mating: take females to stud facility
  • No AI: artificial insemination unavailable in the UK

Age requirements

  • Females: minimum 12 months, 18-24 months recommended
  • Weight: must be 65% of mother's weight
  • Males: reproductive at 18 months, breed at 2.5-3 years
  • Maturity: penis must fully detach from prepuce
UK timing: Mate after shearing in late spring or after New Year to ensure summer births. UK winter births are challenging for cria weight gain.
Pregnancy Monitoring

Gestation Management

Stage Timing Key actions
Early pregnancy 0-60 days Spit-off test (85% accuracy), reduce stress
Confirmation 60+ days Ultrasound for definitive confirmation
Mid-pregnancy 6-9 months Maintain body condition, regular monitoring
Late pregnancy 6 weeks before due Intensive monitoring, prepare birthing area
Pre-birth Final week Daily observation, birthing kit ready
  • Gestation period: average 11.5 months (343 days), range 320-375 days
  • Single births: twins are extremely rare in alpacas
  • Body condition: keep pregnant females on the heavy side, as they lose weight nursing
  • Location: keep close to the house for easy observation in final weeks
Birthing & Care

Birth Preparation & Process

Essential birthing kit

  • 10% iodine solution (navel care)
  • Clean towels for drying
  • Dried or frozen colostrum backup
  • Lamb teat for bottle feeding
  • Navel clips for bleeding control
  • Cria coat for warmth
  • Lubricant and shoulder-length gloves
  • Chlorhexidine for multiple navel dips

Normal birth process

  • Most births trouble-free, occur before midday
  • Head-first with front legs extended
  • Minimal intervention required
  • Most births complete within 30 minutes

Emergency complications

  • Dystocia: retained leg position
  • Uterine torsion: 180° twist from rolling
  • Breach birth: requires immediate intervention
  • Premature birth: non-erupted incisors, soft nails
Emergency protocol: Have a camelid-experienced vet contact ready. Breach births require immediate action due to umbilical cord stretching.
Post-Birth Care

Critical First 24 Hours

Immediate cria care

  • Navel disinfection: 10% iodine immediately
  • Drying: ensure dry before nightfall (critical in the UK)
  • Standing: should stand within 2 hours
  • Nursing: must nurse within first 4 hours

Dam care

  • Placenta: should pass within 2-6 hours
  • Hygiene: wash blood to prevent flies
  • Re-mating: possible 14 days post-birth
  • Monitoring: watch for signs of infection

Colostrum management

  • Timing: 10-20% of body weight in first 24 hours
  • Critical period: 5% in first 6 hours essential
  • IgG levels: minimum 800 mg/dl, preferably 1000 mg/dl
  • Alternatives: goat, sheep or cow colostrum if needed
  • Failure: requires plasma transfusion if inadequate
BAS Registration

British Alpaca Society Requirements

Registration categories

  • Registered: breeding females & proven males with DNA
  • Notified: potential stud males (upgradeable)
  • Listed: non-breeding animals

Process requirements

  • Timing: log cria before first birthday
  • Parentage: only registered parents qualify
  • DNA testing: mandatory for all registered males
  • ID system: microchip and ear tag required
BAS registry: Over 40,000 alpacas registered across 1,500+ herds, managed by the Grassroots system serving 1,600+ owners.
