Born on 24th July 2025, Chamomile had a very straightforward birth, she was on her feet and looking to feed within an hour. She is a healthy, strong, and beautiful looking cria (baby alpaca), with a mid-fawn fleece and a cute little white patch around her face. She is Honeysuckle's first cria and she has proved to be a wonderful mum.
She has thrived on her mother's milk and, although cria begin to graze at about 2-3 weeks of age, she won't be weaned until 5-6 months of age. Nutrition is always a real concern, and we have to make sure she gets plenty of hard feed as well as her mother's milk. The father does not have a role in the rearing of their young.
Chamomile has a solid colour in her fleece, which is sought after, however she does have some lighter markings around her face. These markings have likely come from her dad, Ash. He is tuxedo grey, the rarest and sought after colour in alpaca fleece.
Grey comes from a gene mutation, these markings indicate she could be carrying the grey gene and may produce grey cria in the future. Her first 'baby' fleece is showing medium crimp and density. Her conformation (shape) is looking to be of a high standard, though this cannot be judged until she is 3 years of age.
Chamomile is a lively cria and is often seen enjoying a rough and tumble game with the other cria. These games are a necessary part of development as the cria are learning how to earn their place in the herd as they mature. Chamomile will begin halter training in November 2025 and will be ready to walk early in 2026. She will be part of the walking team until she reaches breeding age.
