Born on 9th July 2025, Meadowsweet had a very straightforward birth, arriving just after lunch. She is a healthy and beautiful looking cria (baby alpaca). She has a lovely mid fawn fleece. Meadowsweet has thrived on her mother's milk and, although cria begin to graze at about 2-3 weeks of age, she won't be weaned until 5-6 months of age.
Nutrition is always a real concern, and we have to make sure she gets plenty of hard feed as well as her mother's milk. The father does not have a role in the rearing of their young.
Our theme for the cria names this year is 'Wildflowers'. We asked our Facebook followers to suggest names and then drew a name from the suggestions. Meadowsweet was chosen and hopefully, she will have her mum's sweet nature, so will be the perfect name for her.
Meadowsweet is Bella's third cria, and second with Ash. Meadowsweet has a lovely mid-fawn fleece, slightly lighter than her mum, though colour of the first fleece can be affected by amniotic staining, so we won't see her true colour until she has been sheared next year. Meadowsweet's first 'baby' fleece showed medium crimp and density. Her conformation (shape) is looking to be of a high standard, though this cannot be judged until she is 3 years of age.
Meadowsweet is a lovely strong cria and is often seen enjoying chasing games with the others around the fields. These games are a necessary part of development as the cria are learning how to earn their place in the herd as they mature. Meadowsweet will begin halter training in November 2025 and will be joining us on our alpaca walks in February 2026. Meadowsweet will take part in the walks until she is ready to mate.
