Born on 6th July 2025, Dandelion had a very straightforward birth. He was born just as we arrived to feed and get ready for the walk. He is a healthy and beautiful looking cria (baby alpaca). He has a lovely white fleece and unusual blue eyes.
Dandelion has thrived on his mother's milk and, although cria begin to graze at about 2-3 weeks of age, he won't be weaned until 5-6 months of age. Nutrition is always a real concern, and we have to make sure he gets plenty of hard feed as well as his mother's milk. The father does not have a role in the rearing of their young.
Our theme for the cria names this year is 'Wildflowers'. We saw lots of dandelions flowering around the park when he was born, so it was the perfect choice for him.
Dandelion is Kemi's fifth cria, but the first she has had with Ash. He has inherited the beautiful high crimp and density in his fleece from Kemi, his white colouring, and blue eyes have come from Ash, who is a Tuxedo Grey. Both the solid colour in his fleece and high crimp and density are sought after. His conformation (shape) is looking to be of a high standard, though this cannot be judged until he is 3 years of age.
Dandelion is a lovely strong cria and is often seen enjoying chasing games with the others around the fields. These games are a necessary part of development as the cria are learning how to earn their place in the herd as they mature. Dandelion will begin halter training in November 2025 and will be joining us on our alpaca walks in February 2026.
