Guided alpaca trekking in Hampshire — a full 2-hour trek through the woodland, water meadows and Itchen Navigation of Itchen Valley Country Park. Lead your own alpaca, small groups, from £32 per person.
Picture trekking through ancient woodland alongside a curious, gentle alpaca — their soft footsteps on the path, the River Itchen visible through the trees, and the sounds of the countryside replacing everything else for two hours. That is what Hensting Alpacas at Itchen Valley Country Park offers Hampshire visitors, all year round.
Our alpaca walk route takes you through the ancient woodlands and water meadows of Itchen Valley Country Park — 440 acres of stunning Hampshire countryside that has earned 16 consecutive Green Flag Awards. You will walk alongside the historic River Itchen, through trees that have stood for centuries, with 40+ alpacas as your companions.
Most people search for "alpaca walking" — but a growing number are specifically looking for alpaca trekking, and the distinction matters. Trekking implies a longer, more purposeful walk through countryside rather than a loop around a paddock. At Hensting Alpacas, what we offer is genuinely the trekking end of the spectrum — a full 2-hour guided route through the extensive grounds of Itchen Valley Country Park, following the Itchen Navigation, crossing river meadows, and moving through ancient oak woodland at the pace the alpacas set. The alpacas are lead-trained and responsive; experienced handlers accompany every group and adapt the route to the group's pace and interests. For people who have walked with alpacas elsewhere and found it too brief or too confined, Itchen Valley Country Park provides the space to make it feel like a proper trek.
Your trek begins with an introduction to your alpaca companion — learning their name, their personality, and how to walk them safely with the halter. The route takes you through Itchen Valley's ancient woodland and water meadows along the Itchen Navigation, a purposeful trek of real countryside rather than a loop around a paddock. Along the way your handler explains alpaca behaviour, the park's ecology, and the history of this remarkable 440-acre countryside setting. The trek ends with feeding time and close-contact time with the wider herd.
