Hampshire's dedicated accessible alpaca walk — every Wednesday on surfaced level paths at Itchen Valley Country Park. Free carer tickets, all mobility aids welcome, small group sessions.
Picture walking through ancient woodland alongside a curious, gentle alpaca — their soft footsteps on the path, the River Itchen visible through the trees, and the sounds of the countryside replacing everything else for two hours. That is what Hensting Alpacas at Itchen Valley Country Park offers Hampshire visitors, every Wednesday from April through to October.
Our Wednesday accessible walks run at a relaxed pace along Itchen Valley's 5km of surfaced, level pathways — suitable for wheelchairs, mobility aids, and all abilities. Carers attend free of charge. Advance booking essential to guarantee your space on this popular session.
Hensting Alpacas runs a dedicated accessible alpaca walk every Wednesday from mid-May through to October — a session specifically designed for visitors with physical disabilities, mobility conditions, sensory needs, or anyone who benefits from a more relaxed, supported pace. The route uses Itchen Valley Country Park's 5km of surfaced, level accessible pathways, which are suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames, and all mobility aids. Carers attend entirely free of charge on Wednesday accessible sessions, and the walk is led by handlers experienced in adapting the experience to meet each visitor's needs. Advanced booking is essential as numbers per session are intentionally kept small to ensure quality of experience.
Your walk begins with an introduction to your alpaca companion — learning their name, their personality, and how to walk them safely with the halter. The route takes you through Itchen Valley's ancient woodland and water meadows on a level, circular path of approximately one mile. Along the way your handler explains alpaca behaviour, the park's ecology, and the history of this remarkable 440-acre countryside setting. The walk ends with feeding time and close-contact time with the wider herd.
Wednesday accessible walks run from 10:00am–11:30am, a slightly shorter session than our standard walks, and are limited to a smaller group size to allow extra time and care for each participant. The accessible route through Itchen Valley takes in riverside woodland and open meadow sections, all on surfaced pathways with no significant gradients. Hensting Alpacas is one of very few UK alpaca experiences to offer a dedicated accessibility-focused session as a regular fixture rather than by special arrangement — our Wednesday sessions are open to anyone who would benefit from a calmer, less crowded, more supported alpaca walk.
